organization tips
for your kitchen in 2020 & beyond
COVID-19 has had a profound impact on families across the nation, and like many communities, Durham has experienced its fair share of challenges. With extended periods of time spent at home, many of us have been doing our best to stay productive and make the most of the situation. Whether it’s taking up new hobbies, working remotely, or simply finding ways to manage our daily routines, staying busy has become a form of comfort and stability. In that spirit, we wanted to share a few practical ideas to help you stay productive—starting with one of the most frequently used spaces in any home: the kitchen.
The kitchen serves as the central hub of the household, where meals are prepared, conversations happen, and family life unfolds. That’s why it’s one of the best places to begin when it comes to getting organized. A well-organized kitchen not only makes cooking more efficient, but it can also create a sense of calm and clarity in your daily life.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple mission: to tangibly improve the lives of our customers and employees. We truly believe that when your kitchen is easier to use, your entire day can run more smoothly. So if you’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed or restless at home, why not take this time to simplify and reorganize? Here are some kitchen organization tips that we believe can make life just a little bit easier.
Tip #1: Empty Out the Cabinets
Pull everything out of each cabinet. Discard anything that is not frequently used, duplicate items, broken items or things you forgot you had. Do this with each cabinet and drawer, setting up separate areas on the floor for each grouping. Be ruthless. Most kitchens are short on storage space, the goal is to only have things you love and use at the end of this process.
Tip #2: Organize the Put Back
It is now time to group items together. Sort all your baking items and cooking items, those pieces should be kept in the cabinets close to where you do food preparation. Utensils should be in the drawer nearest to the prep area for easy access. Glassware might be best near the sink or refrigerator. Make a coffee or tea station that includes sugar, mugs and filters, and place it near the water source. This way you avoid going back and forth across the kitchen just to make your morning beverage. Discard any plastic containers without lids, and store the remaining containers either with the lids on them or stacked together with the lids in the top one. Finally, you will want to group the dishes you eat from, glassware, holiday or other seasonal items that only get used once or twice a year all together.
Tip #3: Use Containers to Store Items
Use baskets or containers to streamline the inside your cabinets. Group together things like packets of sauce mixes, gravy mixes, hot cereal packets and hot cocoa envelopes, then put them into small plastic containers to avoid them being scattered all over the cabinet. In addition to baskets, you could even use shoeboxes to store food that is in tiny boxes such as taco seasoning or pudding mix.
Tip #4: Keep the Countertops Clear
No matter the style of the kitchen, from modern, traditional, or farmhouse, we know that keeping your countertops clear of clutter immediately makes it feel brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming. Find a drawer to store the take out menus, the mail, the extra batteries etc. and don’t let them find their way back to your counters. If you invest the time and energy into de-cluttering and organizing your kitchen, it is an investment that will pay off in happiness for years to come.
