1920’s Bungalow Kitchen Remodel

Kitchen Remodel – to Whole Home New Construction Build

What started out as a “simple” kitchen remodel on a 1920’s bungalow in downtown Durham area, turned into a whole house new construction build. What every homeowner fears, the worst case scenario, was unfolding right before our eyes. The design process went off without a hitch. We designed the new kitchen remodel, added a powder bath to the first floor, and even collaborated with our architect on adding a second story for the growing family.

The troubles began as the team began to demo the house. Noticing that there was once a fire with lots of water damage to the house was the first red-flag, but then the termite damage was even worse than anticipated. The city deemed the house unlivable and we had to stop all work and tear it down. After the initial shock lessened, we put on our bootstraps and got to work.

We re-designed the house and this time, we were able to include all of the wants and wishes, cause everything was going to be new. The homeowner’s still wanted to have the feeling and the charm of an older home. There was something about the level of detail within the original house that made it more charming. Our build team re-created this with larger trim casings with greater level of detail than even the existing house. The design team worked together on paint colors, the plumbing finishes, and helping with the costing for the electrical fixtures; really helping to tie the spaces together from old to new. We absolutely love this charming kitchen from the 1920’s to now.
